The Magistrate magazine is published ten times a year, with a joint issue in the summer (July/August) and in the winter (November/December). It is the Associations main tool for communicating with members and it is hoped that members will read it regularly and find it both informative and interesting. There are a variety of articles, ranging in subject and seriousness as well as regular features such as the letters and book reviews.
The centre pages are dedicated to Association Agenda, which is produced as close to deadline as possible so that it is very topical. To comment on Association Agenda please contact the Communications Manager.
For all other editorial matters contact the Editor.
Copy deadlines are usually about four weeks before distribution for the main part of the magazine and two and a half weeks for Association Agenda.
The magazine can be sent electronically as a PDF or in Word to members as well as a printed version. This may be particularly useful for visually impaired members. Please contact the Communications Manager to be put on the distribution list. It is also available from the members' section of the website.
Extra copies of the Magistrate can be obtained from the Membership Department at the national office for recruitment drives, notice boards etc. Quantities over 25 require four weeks notice.

The Editorial Board meets bi-monthly to discuss contents of future issues, design and layout and any other matters relating to the magazine. Membership comprises the Honorary Officers, Chief Executive, Communications Manager and the Editor. The board welcomes comments and ideas from any magistrate.
To ensure the magazine is responding correctly to the needs of members, the editorial board draws on the editorial panel for ideas and feedback. The panel comprises magistrates from around the country who have expressed interest in this task. All correspondence is by email or telephone. Any member who would like to be considered for the editorial panel should contact the Editor with a brief outline of any relevant experience and the kind of ideas they would like to see explored.
Every copy of the Magistrate magazine carries a feature called Sentencing Steps. The idea being that
the reader has a go at sentencing and then compares the decision with that of the district judge.
Relevant factors that need to be taken into consideration are also included in the answer.
The Magistrate magazine carries regular features on legislation, case law and legal advice.
Letters are extremely welcome but, due to restrictions on space, it is impossible to print every letter, and some have to be abridged. Letters can be emailed or posted directly to the Editor or submitted online from the members' area of the website under Magistrate Magazine/Letters for the Magistrate.
| Letters to the Magistrate do NOT constitute part of the official consultation process. If you have an issue that you would like the Magistrates' Association to address, please contact your local branch officers or write direct to the national office. |
News of exceptional individual achievement by branch members, which is of more than local interest, is welcome especially if accompanied by a good quality (sharp definition) photograph - preferably digital. Please discuss with the Communications Manager at the national office.
