The Council of the Association comprises representatives elected by the 60 local branches throughout England and Wales. (See Formula for calculating the number of branch representatives.) Council members are trustees of the Association responsible for the management and administration of the Association. Council determines the policy of the Association as well as deciding the issues to be raised with government and responses to be made to government and other agency consultation papers. Meetings are held three times each year (March, July and November). Most members are magistrates elected by their branches, holding office for three years, but up to five may be co-opted members and the Honorary Treasurer is an ex officio member.
