Court Service

HMCS Court Service is an executive agency of the Department for Constitutional Affairs, which has its own website, covering policy, legislation and the magistrates' courts. The purpose of the Court Service is the delivery of justice. The Agency is responsible for the running of most of the courts and tribunals in England & Wales ie Crown, County, Appeals, and provides the necessary services to the judiciary and court users to ensure its impartial and efficient operation. The Agency also has responsibility for advice to the Lord Chancellor on his responsibilities in relation to magistrates' courts although they remain a locally managed service as defined in statute. As the key service-delivery arm of the Department, the Court Service plays an important part in implementing the Lord Chancellor's agenda for a modern justice system.

The Adult Criminal Case Management Framework, the CCMF, was first issued in July 2004 and updated a year later.  It provides guidance for participants involved in criminal cases to help them prepare and conduct cases efficiently and effectively, thereby complying with the Criminal Procedure Rules.  The Magistrates’ Courts part of the Adult CCMF has now been re-issued to incorporate the lessons learned from criminal Justice Simple Speedy Summary (CJSSS) and can be found at www.cjslonline.gov.uk/framework.  The Crown Court part will follow later.
