Nominations for MA board vacancies open next month

Have you ever thought about standing for election to the MA board? Do you think you or another MA member have the qualities and experiences to be a trustee? If so, now is the time to seriously consider applying as nominations open at the start of June.

Who sits on the MA board of trustees?
The board is made up of up to 12 members:

  • six ordinary members who are elected in blocks of three, for a period of three years (meaning there are elections every two years out of three) – any sitting MA member can put themselves forward
  • up to four national officers, comprising the chair and up to two deputy chairs (who are elected annually and must be a current board member or a chair of one of our four policy committees), and the treasurer (who is appointed by the board for a term it decides – currently 3 years)
  • up to two co-opted members who are chosen by the board annually to fill any gaps in skills or experience.

What skills or experiences are you looking for?
The board of trustees has identified the following areas where it would benefit from additional skills and experiences:

  • finance
  • income generation and/or business development
  • marketing, media and public relations

However, this isn't an exhaustive list, and any sitting member can decide to stand.

Which positions are available this year?
Three ordinary member places are up for election this year. The process' timeline is as follows:

  • 1 June 2022 – nominations open
  • 31 June 2022 – nominations close (all candidates' statements must have been received by this date)
  • 1 August 2022 – candidates' statements will be included in the August-September edition of MAGISTRATE magazine
  • September 2022 – voting for contested positions will take place during the first three weeks of the month, and the results will be announced before the end of the month
  • 15 October 2022 – new trustees formally take up their roles at our annual general meeting.

Where can I find out more about what the role of a trustee entails?
The Charity Commission has published a handy online resource that contains lots of helpful information for those considering taking on such a role. It has also created a series of five-minute guides on some of the basics all trustees need to know:

If you have any specific questions about being a trustee at the MA, or the election process, please contact our CEO.

The application form can be downloaded at the bottom of this page, and needs to be returned to Tom Franklin, CEO, by Thursday 30 June 2022.
