Volunteers for our new member support line needed

Calling all experienced magistrates who would like to provide a supportive ear to fellow members

Volunteers for our new member support line needed

The Magistrates' Association (MA) is seeking a small number of experienced magistrates to volunteer to support our new member support line, which will be launching later in 2022.

The member support line will be open to all MA members, and will provide a friendly ear and sign-posting and referral, to any member who has an issue and hasn't been able to make progress resolving it themselves. The MA already receives emails and phone calls from members who don't know where to turn for help with a problem – and our research shows that members would like us to provide further help. Also, as the role of bench chair is soon to be discontinued the MA wants to be sure we have our members covered! That's why we'll be launching our support line, making it easier for members to get in touch. The sort of issues users might wish to discuss include:

  • Problems with claiming expenses
  • Understanding processes and rules, such as training, disciplinary or taking on new roles
  • Personal issues or clashes with other magistrates

Volunteers will not be able to intervene in any matter users raise.

The MA is looking for six individuals who:

  • Are experienced magistrates
  • Enjoy supporting other magistrates, including those who are new to the bench
  • Are able to demonstrate empathy, strong listening skills, and confidentiality
  • Preferably have had experience with Citizens Advice, CRUSE, mediation or similar services
  • Can give up to three hours a week, to respond to emails and speak on the phone (no need to travel from home)

Supported by Bev Higgs JP you will be at the forefront of developing what we think will become a vital service for our members.

If you're interested, please email Tom Franklin, chief executive, to express your interest – setting out briefly (in less than 500 words) how you meet the criteria and why you want to be involved in this project – by 15 August 2022.
