Young Magistrates' Network chair appears in podcast Luke Rigg speaks to Reasons to be Cheerful about the role of magistrates 14 February 2022 This month, the chair of our Young Magistrates' Network, Luke Rigg, was invited to talk about the role of magistrates on the Reasons to be Cheerful podcast. Every week, Reasons to be Cheerful sees hosts Ed Miliband — the MP for Doncaster North and Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy — and Geoff Lloyd — a multi-award-winning radio host and podcaster — come together with different policymakers, experts, campaigners, academics, and thinkers from around the world to shine a light on ideas and approaches that are helping to create a better world. Luke’s appearance alongside lawyer Raj Chada and charity founder Penelope Gibbs was especially timely given the government’s recent drive to recruit 4,000 new magistrates. It was an excellent chance to raise public awareness about the role of a magistrate and what the application process involves, as well as to share personal experiences of sitting on the bench.
