Help run your local branch

We have 52 branches across England and Wales, each managed by a branch executive committee. Magistrates like you have stepped up to help their local committee in various ways – find out how you can join them.

What roles can I do on my branch executive committee?

Our branches couldn’t run without their branch executive committee. Each committee has a number of different roles, which are open to sitting or retired magistrates, who must also be members of the Magistrates’ Association.

These roles are:

  • Chair
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Membership secretary
  • Retired member representative
  • Magistrates in the Community coordinator
  • Council representative
  • Bench representatives
  • Committee member.

Why join your branch executive committee?

Have an impact on your local community

Volunteering for your branch allows you to make a tangible impact on your local community. Whether you choose an executive role, get involved with Magistrates in the Community, or join as a committee member, your contributions directly influence the activities and initiatives that benefit those around you. Be the link between your local members and national head office, to drive home the issues that are of importance to your local community of magistrates.

Personal growth

Engaging in volunteer roles within the MA offers opportunities for development. You can enhance your leadership skills, use your organisational skills, and broaden your network within the magistracy.

Get involved in Magistrates in the Community

As a Magistrates in the Community coordinator or similar roles, you can actively contribute to fostering positive relationships between the legal system and the public. Help demystify the legal system for both young people and community groups to educate the public about the valuable role of a magistrate, and have fun while you do it!

Networking opportunities

Volunteering provides a unique platform to connect with like-minded individuals and fellow magistrates. Build a strong network that can support you, share insights, and provide valuable mentorship to other magistrates.

Your next steps

Whether you have a specific role in mind or want to start as a committee member, your dedication and enthusiasm are invaluable to the success of your branch.

To express your interest or learn more about available opportunities, contact your current branch executive or committee members. If you’d like to know who your branch executives are and how to contact them, please email us at membership@magistrates-association.org.uk.

Join us in shaping the future of the MA and make a positive impact with your local community of magistrates.
