Official figures have revealed that more than 1,000 new magistrates were welcomed to the bench in 2018. In addition to this, applicants can also now apply to sit directly in the family court, which previously was only possible after sitting in the criminal court. This has increased the range of roles open to newly recruited magistrates.
Additionally the figures reveal that diversity within the magistracy has also increased in recent years, with the number of BAME magistrates now standing at 12% – a 4% increase since 2012. 55% of magistrates are now female. The full press release can be found here.
