The Magistrates’ Association (MA) is run by members, for members – working to ensure the magistracy is the best it can be for everyone in society. If you care passionately about its future and can spare up to four hours a month, we’d love you to consider applying for one of our policy committee vacancies.
Our policy committees bring together MA members to steer research, develop ideas, and shape our positions on key issues. Right now, we have vacancies on five committees:
- adult court committee
- family court committee
- youth court committee
- diversity and inclusion committee
- training, learning and development committee.
We welcome applications from magistrates of all backgrounds, with any length of service, and a wide range of skills and experiences.
About the role
Committee appointments are for up to three years. Members attend three meetings a year (two held virtually) and work with the chair and staff team to develop policy statements and respond to consultations.
Who can apply
Any current sitting magistrate who is also a full member of the MA can apply. We welcome applications from magistrates of all backgrounds, with any length of service, and a wide range of skills and experiences.

Informal conversations with shortlisted candidates will take place on a rolling basis during August/September, with appointments confirmed in October.
Appointments are made by our Policy Board except for the diversity and inclusion committee, where elections will be held within our diversity and inclusion networks.
