This month, the deputy chair of our young magistrates’ network, Katherine Sirrell, was invited to talk about the role of magistrates on the Kids Law podcast.
Established as part of the Next 100 Years project, Kids Law seeks to educate, inform, and inspire children about legal issues affecting them. Designed for children and parents, each episode sees hosts Alma-Constance Denis-Smith and Lucinda Acland discuss pertinent legal matters with relevant experts.
Katherine’s appearance was particularly timely given the widespread media and public interest the magistracy was receiving following the government’s doubling of magistrates’ sentencing powers.
It was the perfect opportunity to explain what magistrates do, how they are different to judges, the types of cases they hear, the importance of a representative bench, and what happens if children need to appear in court.
